The sliced defense are not new, but Liu Yi and Chen Bo Yang are finding a lot of success using this risky move. Being able to execute this type of defense consistently has brought their game up to another level. Let’s discuss.
The defensive lift involves hitting the attacks from the opponent in order to send the return high. While it opens up the defending pair to another attack, they remain in a firm defensive position. That means, they are in no worse position than they were before. The logic here is to let the opponent attack, while looking for an opportunity to move the shuttle into a position which makes it hard for the opponent to continue the attack. When the opponent is unable to continue the attack, then the players can launch a counter attack.
The alternative would be to send a low defensive return using a block. The risk here is that when the opponents are attacking, the second player would be taking a position in front waiting to pounce on any shuttles which are low.
We have seen these actions all the time when watching fast and furious men’s doubles matches. The attacker keeps smashing and the defender keeps lifting. It becomes like a game of attrition, each waiting for the other to make a mistake.
Liu Yi and Chen Bo Yang has managed to add the slice defense to their game and make it work consistently. Slicing a shot in Chinese style badminton is done by turning the racquet head during to hit. Unlike other styles of play, which swings the racquet in a slanted position to do a slice, the Chinese way of slicing involves a normal swing, but the racquet head is rotated as the player hits it.
Have a look at the highlights above. Both Liu Yi and Chen Bo Yang turns their racquet head when they are defending.
What happens when this is done is that the shuttle flies in a lower arc. The slice means the shuttle does not fly as high as it usually does. And, as the shuttle is sliced, it does not travel as far. It slows down quickly towards the back of the court.
The lack of height in the defensive return makes it hard for the opponents to continue their attack. That is how Liu Yi and Chen Bo Yang forces their opponents to transition from attack into a flat game. When it goes into a flat game, it becomes a neutral game where nobody is really doing the attacking. Both pairs are trying to move each other around, looking for an initiative to force the opponent to either send it high to let them attack, or win a point outright from the flat game.
Their success in using this technique is causing a lot of problems for their opponents as it denies their opponents chances to attack outright. Alfian and Fikri who are at home and have been in terrific form and beating a lot of top pairs lately, came up against Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi, and they were made to look very ordinary. Remarkable.
Han Jian has trained us in this defense. It is extremely hard to do even in an ideal training situation. Have a look at the video below. It shows how Han Jian wants us to do the sliced return.
That’s it for this entry.
Until the next entry, eat well, get plenty of rest and keep the badminton going!
